Metal Part 2 - Platinum

Let’s test your mettle with a platinum metal test this week.  How would you describe this precious metal? Multiple choice – is it brittle, hard, or soft? Platinum is a soft, ductile metal with a beautiful lustrous sheen.

How about the color? Gray, white, or multicolor? Trick question -  platinum is a beautiful silvery-white metal.

Does it scratch and wear easily, somewhat, or hardly at all? Platinum's resistance to wear and tarnish makes it well suited for making fine jewelry.

If you compare the same ring type and size, which would feel heavier – gold, platinum, or silver? Platinum is the densest of these metals and would feel heavier.

To be stamped as platinum, what percent of pure platinum does a piece have to contain? Is it 50%, 80%, or 95%? It has to be at least 95% pure platinum to earn the stamp.

Now you know some facts about this beautiful and rare precious metal. Knowledge is power! Go choose a gorgeous platinum piece at your favorite fine jewelry store!
